Question 1

When should I schedule hurricane prep for my AC and electrical system?

Accepted Answer

Ideally before June, when hurricane season officially begins. Scheduling early also means you're not competing for appointment slots with everyone else once a storm is actually forecasted.

Question 2

Is whole-house surge protection worth it if I already have surge protector power strips?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Plug-in surge strips only protect what's plugged into them. Whole-house surge protection installed at your panel protects your AC system, major appliances, and wiring throughout the entire home.

Question 3

Is it safe to turn my AC back on immediately after the power comes back on post-storm?

Accepted Answer

Not always. Check for standing water near the unit and electrical panel first, and consider restoring power gradually rather than turning everything on at once.

Question 4

Should I turn off my pool heater before a hurricane?

Accepted Answer

Yes — if storm surge or flooding is expected in your area, shut off and unplug pool equipment ahead of time, and have a licensed technician inspect the electrical connections before turning it back on.

Question 5

Why is my upstairs so much hotter than downstairs?

Accepted Answer

Heat naturally rises, so second floors run warmer, and upstairs rooms often sit closer to a hot attic while being farthest from the air handler. In a St. Pete summer that combination is tough to beat with a standard single-zone system. Duct sealing, added attic insulation, or a zoning solution usually closes the gap.

Question 6

Does closing vents in unused rooms help balance the temperature?

Accepted Answer

It's a common trick, but it usually backfires. Closing vents raises pressure in your ductwork, which can force air out through leaks and make your system work harder — often making other rooms less comfortable, not more. Leaving vents open and addressing the real airflow issue is the better fix.

Question 7

Will a bigger AC unit fix my hot rooms?

Accepted Answer

Not usually — and an oversized unit can make things worse. Systems that are too large short-cycle, meaning they cool quickly but shut off before pulling humidity out of the air, leaving rooms muggy. Proper sizing and even air distribution matter far more than raw capacity.

Question 8

How much does it cost to fix uneven cooling in St. Petersburg?

Accepted Answer

It depends entirely on the cause — a filter swap or minor duct repair is inexpensive, while duct replacement or a ductless mini-split for a problem room is a larger investment. The smartest first step is a professional diagnosis so you're only paying to fix what's actually wrong. Air Bros can pinpoint it fast — call 727-217-6148.

Question 9

Will this replace my homeowner's insurance surge coverage?

Accepted Answer

No — think of it as reducing how often you need to file a claim in the first place, not a substitute for coverage.

Question 10

Can I install this myself if I'm comfortable with basic electrical work?

Accepted Answer

No. This work happens inside a live main panel, and Florida code requires a licensed electrician for the installation and permitting.

Question 11

Does this help with outages, not just surges?

Accepted Answer

No — a surge protector doesn't keep the power on during an outage. That's a separate conversation about generators or battery backup.

Question 12

How do I know if my home already has one installed?

Accepted Answer

Look at your main panel for a small module wired directly into the breakers, usually with an indicator light. If you're not sure, it's a five-minute check for an electrician — easier than guessing and finding out the hard way during the next storm.

Question 13

What happens after the protector absorbs a surge — do I need to replace it right away?

Accepted Answer

Depends on the size of the surge. Most units have an indicator light that shows when they've taken a hit and are no longer providing protection. A single small surge usually doesn't use it up, but a major event can, so it's worth having it checked after any big storm rather than assuming it's still working.

Question 14

How much faster does an AC really fail near the Gulf?

Accepted Answer

It varies by exact distance from the water and how exposed the unit is, but it's common to see meaningful corrosion damage in half the time compared to an inland system — sometimes less.

Question 15

Can a corroded coil be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Accepted Answer

Minor surface corrosion can sometimes be treated and coated. Once fins have deteriorated enough to restrict airflow, or copper tubing has pitted through, repair usually isn't cost-effective compared to replacement.

Question 16

Does salt air corrosion void my manufacturer warranty?

Accepted Answer

Many manufacturers exclude corrosion damage in coastal zones unless the unit has factory-installed coastal protection. It's worth checking your specific warranty terms, since this catches a lot of coastal homeowners off guard.

Question 17

Is there a type of AC unit that resists salt air better?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Units with factory-applied coastal coil coatings and coastal-rated cabinets hold up noticeably longer than standard residential models. If you're due for a replacement, this is worth asking about upfront, before the first corroded coil.

Question 18

Do I need an electrician for a new AC installation?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. New AC systems frequently draw different electrical loads than the unit they replace, and older homes may need a disconnect, breaker, or panel update to meet current code. Whether a specific installation requires it depends on the age of the home's electrical system and the size of the new unit.

Question 19

How do I check if a contractor's license is real?

Accepted Answer

Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) maintains a public license lookup where both HVAC and electrical contractor licenses can be verified by name or license number.

Question 20

Can unpermitted electrical work affect selling my home?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Home inspectors routinely flag unpermitted electrical work during a sale, and it can require the seller to pull a retroactive permit, make repairs, or renegotiate price before closing.

Question 21

Is it more expensive to hire a dual-licensed HVAC and electrical company?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Subcontracting electrical work often adds a markup from the AC company on top of the electrician's own price. A dual-licensed company quotes the full job directly, which frequently costs about the same or less than paying two separate markups.

Question 22

Why should I have regular (or preventative) maintenance?

Accepted Answer

Your heating and cooling systems work incredibly hard to perform their functions for your home every day. The constant stopping, starting and continual operation can wear down any machine if the proper care and maintenance is delayed. However, by performing regular maintenance, you can maximize the lifecycle of your heating or cooling unit and guard against many common equipment failures. Preventive maintenance inspections performed on a regular basis can uncover leaks, rust, rot, soot, frayed wires and corroded electrical contacts.

Question 23

How often should I have it performed?

Accepted Answer

You should have maintenance completed on your system twice a year to ensure maximum efficiency and prevent possible problems that may occur in the near future.

Question 24

What equipment requires regular (or preventative) maintenance?

Accepted Answer

Heat pumps and air conditioners require a professional tune-up twice a year; in the spring and fall. Inspections on boiler and furnace systems should include ductwork, pipes, dampers, valves, the chimney, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, oil tank and every part of the actual furnace and boiler. Meanwhile, heat pump and air conditioning unit inspections should also include inspections of the fan, compressor, indoor coils, outdoor coils, and refrigerant lines.

Question 25

What is the SEER rating?

Accepted Answer

The SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is how the efficiency of your heating and cooling equipment is measured. The SEER is the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity, as compared to other systems. For example, a 3-ton unit may have a SEER efficiency rating of 13, 14, or 15. The higher the SEER the more efficient the system will be. The SEER rating of any given unit can range anywhere from 13 to 21.

Question 26

Why is the SEER rating on the Energy Guide different than what my dealer quoted?

Accepted Answer

Each split system cooling unit has a nominal SEER rating. This rating can be increased with the upgrade of the same series indoor unit. The SEER rating of a system is based on the combination of equipment installed in the home. The outdoor equipment (heat pump or air conditioner), as well as the indoor equipment (evaporator coil and furnace, or air handler), play a vital role in the total rating.

Question 27

What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

Accepted Answer

Since they are electronic, programmable thermostats are more accurate and efficient than thermostats that contain mercury. With programmable thermostats you can control the temperature in your home at different times of day without ever touching your thermostat. Because everything is automatic, you will never forget to change the setting on your own.

Question 28

What type of filter should I use?

Accepted Answer

Standard filters work to keep your system and its ductwork clean, but they don't really improve indoor air quality. To do that you need a media air cleaner. The media filter rests between the main return duct and the blower cabinet and will improve dust and particle removal up to seven times that of a standard filter. However, upgrading to a pleated media filter will remove everything from dust to airborne viruses from the filtered air. Always choose a filter that matches your blower's capacity.

Question 29

How often should I replace my air filter?

Accepted Answer

For optimal efficiency and filtration, we recommend that you replace your disposable filters at least once a month. If you have washable filters, they should be cleaned once a month.

Question 30

Why can't I find the correct size furnace filter at my local home improvement store for my brand equipment?

Accepted Answer

Filters for your unit are made from higher-quality materials than those of the disposable filters found in retail stores. For that reason, replacement filters can only be purchased through a dealer. However, keep in mind that some filters are reusable, and can be washed by hand in cold water.

Question 31

What does my warranty cover?

Accepted Answer

The standard factory warranty covers parts that fail during the warranty period due to defect in the part. The warranty does not cover labor. A warranty certificate was included with your homeowner information packet, and is specific to the model numbers, serial numbers and installation dates of your products. All equipment that we install is registered with the corporation to ensure your 10 year parts warranty. If you cannot find your warranty certificate, Air Bros Air Conditioning & Heating will also be able to provide you with that information. With a Air Bros Air Conditioning & Heating Total Comfort Plan, you'll have a ten year parts and labor warranty on your equipment.

Question 32

Which equipment will best fit my home?

Accepted Answer

There are many factors that affect the sizing and specifications of your system, including square footage, insulation, window surface and configuration, geographic location of your home, duct sizing and arrangement, and many others. Air Bros Air Conditioning & Heating can perform an in-home load analysis to determine which equipment combinations will perfectly suit your home and your family's needs. Depending upon the construction of your home, one (1) ton of air conditioning can cool anywhere from 300 to 800 square feet of home. The only way to ensure the size of the system you purchase will be large enough to heat or cool your home, but not any larger than you need, is to have your home's individual heating and cooling needs evaluated by a licensed professional.

Question 33

What is the life expectancy of my AC unit?

Accepted Answer

When it comes to AC units, there are many variables that affect life expectancy, including, of course, the regularity of routine maintenance. A well-maintained good quality AC system can last 15 years in this area. On average, in the St. Petersburg, FL, area, we see systems lasting 10-15 years.

Question 34

Does living near Old Tampa Bay shorten the life of my AC?

Accepted Answer

It can. Salt air off the bay accelerates corrosion on outdoor condenser coils, cabinets, and electrical connections, and waterfront and near-waterfront Safety Harbor homes often see this wear years ahead of schedule. Regular maintenance — rinsing the coil, checking connections, and catching corrosion early — makes a real difference, and when it's time to replace, we can recommend equipment better suited to a coastal environment.

Question 35

Why does my Safety Harbor home still feel humid when the AC is running?

Accepted Answer

Your AC removes some moisture as it cools, but in a town built on natural springs and sitting right on the water, the humidity load often exceeds what cooling alone can handle. If your home feels clammy, smells musty, or shows condensation, a whole-home dehumidifier that runs independently of the AC is usually the fix. It's one of the most effective upgrades for a waterfront home in this climate.

Question 36

I have an older bungalow downtown with no ductwork — can I still get central cooling?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many of Safety Harbor's historic Main Street–area homes were built before ducted HVAC was standard, and ductless mini-split systems are ideal for them. They cool individual rooms or zones without tearing into walls and ceilings, which preserves the character of an older home while giving you efficient, quiet comfort and precise temperature control room by room.

Question 37

How often should I have my AC serviced in Safety Harbor?

Accepted Answer

At least once a year, and ideally twice given the local conditions. Salt air, heavy humidity, and Florida's long cooling season put more strain on equipment here than in many inland areas, so an annual or semiannual tune-up to clean coils, treat the condensate drain, and test components helps prevent the breakdowns that tend to hit hardest in mid-summer.

Question 38

Do I need a permit to replace my AC system in Safety Harbor?

Accepted Answer

Yes. AC system replacements and new installations require a permit through Pinellas County, and Air Bros pulls that permit on every job. Permitting ensures the work meets Florida building code, protects your home's value, and gives you documentation that the system was installed properly — which matters especially on waterfront properties where insurance and resale scrutiny can be higher.

Question 39

Does living on the Gulf shorten the life of my AC in Redington Shores?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Direct Gulf-front salt air accelerates corrosion on capacitors, contactors, and outdoor cabinets, and Redington Shores properties often see this wear years ahead of schedule compared to homes just a few miles inland. Regular maintenance — cleaning connections and catching corrosion early — makes a real difference, and when it's time to replace, we can recommend equipment better suited to a barrier island environment.

Question 40

Do you service condo and HOA communities in Redington Shores?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We regularly work in Redington Shores' condo buildings, including gated communities like Redington Towers and Club Redington. We coordinate with HOAs and property managers, understand the access and scheduling requirements common to these buildings, and are experienced with the closet air handlers and shared outdoor space typical of condo living.

Question 41

Why does my Redington Shores property still feel humid when the AC is running?

Accepted Answer

Your AC removes some moisture as it cools, but sitting between the Gulf and Boca Ciega Bay means the humidity load often exceeds what cooling alone can handle — especially in units left unoccupied between stays. If your property feels clammy, smells musty, or shows condensation, a whole-home dehumidifier that runs independently of the AC is usually the fix.

Question 42

How often should I have my AC serviced in Redington Shores?

Accepted Answer

At least once a year, and we typically recommend twice given the direct Gulf exposure here. Salt air, humidity, and Florida's long cooling season put more strain on equipment on the barrier island than in many inland areas, so a biannual tune-up to clean coils, treat the condensate drain, and test components helps prevent breakdowns before they hit during peak season.

Question 43

How do I know if my AC needs repair or full replacement?

Accepted Answer

Our technicians inspect the full system — age, refrigerant type, corrosion, and repair history — and give you an honest recommendation. If a repair makes sense, we'll fix it. If the unit is beyond its useful life, we'll walk you through replacement options with no pressure.

Question 44

Are your technicians background-checked and licensed?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every Air Bros technician is background-checked, factory-trained, and works under our state HVAC license (#CAC1820499) and electrical license (#EC13015085).

Question 45

What parts of St. Petersburg do you serve?

Accepted Answer

We serve all of St. Petersburg, including Downtown, Historic Kenwood, Old Northeast, Snell Isle, Crescent Lake, Shore Acres, and Coquina Key, plus Seminole, Largo, Pinellas Park, and the surrounding beach communities.

Question 46

Do you offer same-day AC repair in St. Petersburg?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We offer 24/7 emergency AC repair with same-day service throughout St. Petersburg and the surrounding Pinellas County area.

Question 47

Is Air Bros a local St. Petersburg company, or a franchise?

Accepted Answer

Air Bros is 100% locally owned and operated, headquartered in the Shore Acres neighborhood of St. Petersburg. We're not a franchise — every technician is a direct employee, not a subcontractor.

Question 48

How long does electrical panel replacement take?

Accepted Answer

Most residential panel swaps are completed in a single day, including permit coordination and the brief power shutoff required to disconnect the old panel safely.

Question 49

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade instead of a repair?

Accepted Answer

If your panel trips breakers repeatedly, still uses fuses, or can't support a new appliance like an EV charger, a repair usually just delays the same decision. We'll tell you honestly during the inspection if a repair will hold or if replacement is the better long-term move.

Question 50

Does homeowners insurance require a panel upgrade?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. As private insurers have pulled back from coastal Pinellas County, more homeowners here have landed with Citizens Property Insurance Corporation, and Citizens routinely declines or non-renews coverage on homes with fuse boxes or panels from certain older manufacturers. Check with your insurer, and we're glad to provide documentation once the new panel passes inspection.

Question 51

Can you replace my panel and add a whole-home surge protector at the same time?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Installing a whole-home surge protector during the same visit is more efficient than adding one later, and it's a common pairing given how often Tampa Bay's grid switches during storms.

Question 52

What areas do you serve for electrical panel replacement?

Accepted Answer

We serve St. Petersburg, Seminole, Largo, Clearwater, Pinellas Park, and the surrounding Tampa Bay area. See our full service area for a complete list, or check our FAQs page for more general questions about scheduling and licensing.

Question 53

How often should I service my AC in Clearwater, FL?

Accepted Answer

In Clearwater and throughout Florida, HVAC systems should be serviced twice per year — once in spring before the heavy cooling season, and once in fall. Florida's near-continuous cooling demand and high humidity place significantly more stress on AC systems than in northern states, making semi-annual maintenance essential rather than optional.

Question 54

Why do AC systems near Clearwater Beach fail faster?

Accepted Answer

Properties within a few miles of the Gulf are exposed to salt air that accelerates corrosion on condenser coils, copper lines, and electrical contacts. This can reduce equipment lifespan by three to five years compared to inland Clearwater homes. Annual coil cleaning and corrosion-resistant coatings cost far less than early system replacement.

Question 55

What HVAC brands work best in Clearwater's humid climate?

Accepted Answer

For Clearwater's high humidity and long cooling seasons, systems with strong dehumidification performance are the priority. Top performers include Trane, Carrier, Lennox, and Daikin — all offering units rated for Florida's Climate Zone 2. Variable-speed compressors are especially effective at controlling indoor humidity in Gulf Coast climates.

Question 56

Do you service vacation rental properties in Clearwater Beach?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We work with many vacation rental owners and property managers throughout Clearwater Beach and the barrier islands. We prioritize fast turnaround on rental properties and offer preventive maintenance contracts to reduce mid-booking breakdowns.

Question 57

Does humidity in Clearwater cause mold problems in AC systems?

Accepted Answer

Clearwater's year-round humidity creates ideal conditions for mold and biological growth inside air handlers, evaporator coils, and drain pans. Left unchecked, this circulates through your home's air and can cause health issues for residents. Air Bros inspects for mold and biological buildup on every maintenance visit and recommends UV light air purifiers for homes that have had recurring issues.

Question 58

Is it worth replacing my AC system before hurricane season in Clearwater?

Accepted Answer

If your system is more than ten years old or has needed repeated repairs, replacing it before hurricane season is worth serious consideration. A storm doesn't just risk physical damage to your outdoor unit — the power surges and outages that follow can push an already-stressed system over the edge. Air Bros can assess your current system and give you an honest recommendation on whether repair or replacement makes more sense heading into June.

Question 59

How much does generator installation cost in Pinellas County?

Accepted Answer

Cost depends on generator size, fuel type, the transfer switch, your panel's condition, and whether the unit needs a raised platform for flood elevation. Permits and fuel line work also factor in. We give a written quote after an in-home assessment.

Question 60

Can a generator run my central air conditioner?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if it's sized for your AC's startup surge. A soft start kit or load management can let a smaller generator handle it. Most portable generators can't run central AC.

Question 61

Do I need a permit to install a generator in Pinellas County?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Standby generators need a permit and inspection, and so do transfer switches and interlock kits for portables. We pull the permits through your city or the county.

Question 62

Should I choose natural gas or propane?

Accepted Answer

Natural gas is the simpler choice if your home already has a gas line, because the supply usually keeps flowing during an outage. Without gas service, propane works well, but the tank has to be sized for how long you want to run.

Question 63

Can I install a generator if my home is in a flood zone?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The unit has to sit at or above the required flood elevation, usually on a raised pad or platform. We confirm your flood zone before we quote.

Question 64

How long does generator installation take?

Accepted Answer

A standby install usually takes one to two days on site. Permits, fuel line work, and equipment availability add time before that, so plan ahead of hurricane season.
